We are advertiseing here for two positions. One for a US-based Campaign Coordinator to work for Health In Harmony. Alam Sehat Lestari--our partner organization in Indonesia, is also seeking a Program Coordinator. Please see below for both positions:

Health In Harmony Campaign Manager:

Health in Harmony (HIH) is a U.S.-based, 501(c)3 organization that supports Project ASRI, an innovative program in rural West Kalimantan, Indonesia. ASRI integrates care for human and environmental health by partnering with local communities to provide high-quality, affordable healthcare while protecting the threatened rainforest. In 2007, ASRI opened a clinic offering medical and dental care to the people of that region. ASRI enables local villagers to pay for their healthcare by working on a range of environmental conservation projects aimed at preserving the local rainforest. HIH's primary goal for the next five years is to raise funds to help ASRI build an eco-friendly teaching hospital. This facility will not only provide medical care but will also train doctors and healthcare workers to replicate this model in other parts of the world, to protect threatened environments while caring for the medical needs the planet's poorest people.

Health In Harmony is seeking an experienced fundraising professional to provide leadership and foster success for a comprehensive campaign to fund the construction and operations of the hospital. The Campaign Manager will work 3/4 to full time (negotiable), alongside Health In Harmony's Executive Director and a committed board and volunteer base.

The following are major characteristics we are seeking in candidates for this contracting opportunity:
  • Five or more years experience running capital/comprehensive campaigns or equivalent fundraising experience.
  • Ideally geographically situated in the Pacific Northwest to be able to work closely with HIH's Portland-based executive director; the Bay Area and Washington, DC are second and third choices (respectively), based on where the bulk of donors and board members/volunteers are located. However, for the right candidate we would consider other locations.
  • Exceptional organizational skills, communication abilities, warmth, and compassion.
Tasks will include:
  • Refining the draft structure for a successful 5-year, $3 million comprehensive campaign; implementing the campaign
  • Devising strategy to steward and expand the existing donor base; involving staff, board and volunteers in this work
  • Devising strategy to strengthen relationships with, and solicit gifts from major donors; involving staff, board and volunteers in this work
  • Planning fundraising events in various cities within the US
  • Travel as necessary to meet with donors and implement events
Salary: Commensurate with experience and local norms for comparable positions; no additional benefits. Position is structured as an Independent Contractor position.

Applicants should send a CV and a one-page cover letter to Dr. Kinari Webb (kinariwebb@healthinharmony.org) and Brita Johnson (director@healthinharmony.org), HIH's Executive Director.

Health In Harmony will consider contractor proposals on a rolling basis. All applications due by February 15, 2010.

ASRI Program Coordinator:

The Alam Sehat Lestari Foundation (ASRI) is an innovative joint healthcare and conservation program in West Kalimantan, Indonesia that seeks to protect Gunung Palung National Park and improve health of local communities around the park. ASRI is supported by the US 501(c)3, Health In Harmony (www.healthinharmony.org).

ASRI is seeking a full-time Program Coordinator to live in Sukadana, a remote village in southwestern Borneo where the program is based. The Program Coordinator will work alongside Dr. Kinari Webb, an American doctor who founded and directs the program. The Coordinator will assist Dr. Webb in organizing and overseeing the activities of medical staff, conservation staff, and volunteers who assist in both aspects of the program.

While the Program Coordinator would ideally have educational and professional experience in healthcare, conservation, forestry, or restoration ecology, we consider personality and experience in Indonesia more important factors than specific education and work experience. The following are major characteristics we are seeking in candidates for the position:

  • Candidates should have a competent grasp of Bahasa Indonesia.
  • They should have experience living in Indonesia.
  • They should have spent time previously in rural parts of Indonesia, and they should be willing to accept gracefully the challenges of living in rural Indonesia, including disease risks, household pests, limited food options, difficult travel circumstances, and simple living conditions.
  • They should be skilled at managing a large and diverse staff that includes Indonesian full-time staff and short-term Western volunteers.
  • They should have exceptional organizational skills, communication abilities, patience, warmth, and compassion.
  • Most importantly, candidates should be skilled at and enjoy the unique complexities of problem-solving in Indonesia. They should enjoy helping to envision solutions to decrease poverty, improve community health, and help protect rainforest in the project area. They should be confident and able to take the lead in everyday problem-solving that is an integral part of any program in rural Indonesia, be the challenges that arise related to transportation, staff relationships, government relations, or any one of a diversity of issues.
The Program Coordinator's job will be challenging. It will be equally rewarding. The Alam Sehat Lestari program is unique and extremely promising in its capacity to change the course of environmental destruction that threatens Gunung Palung National Park and make real, permanent improvements to the health and livelihoods of local people living on the park's borders. ASRI has a fantastic, diverse team of Indonesians who are committed to making the world a better place, are a joy to work with, and have already made amazing progress toward program conservation and health goals in the first two years of the program. The Program Coordinator will play a critical role in working with this team to ensure the continued success of ASRI.

We would obviously be delighted if someone would take this position as a volunteer position with only living expenses paid, but we also encourage applicants to apply who would need a salary.

Applicants should send a CV and a one-page cover letter to Dr. Kinari Webb (kinariwebb@yahoo.com) and Dr. Antonia Gorog (antonia.gorog@gmail.com), ASRI's Conservation Director.
